Art, Design & Technology

Art and Design is taught by our immensely talented and highly experienced, specialist teacher, Ms Morgan, in a purpose-designed learning environment. All COLPAI children focus on Drawing in the Autumn term, Painting in Spring and Sculpture in Summer. This approach facilitates inter-year collaboration and whole school exhibitions. COLPAI pupils all have a continuous sketchbook and portfolio that moves through school with them; this allows them to build a substantial body of work by the end of their primary school careers and to reflect on their progress. Each unit of work in our Art curriculum includes an element of art historical study, usually in the form of an artist study.

At COLPAI, we promote Design & Technology in the firm belief that the subject helps children to become autonomous and creative problem solvers. D&T aims to develop children’s ability to design, make and evaluate a wide range of products. Children are encouraged to create items for a purpose and to become proficient in using a range of techniques, materials and tools. Pupils evaluate the effectiveness of their product and suggest refinements to improve upon their design thus developing the higher order skills of critique and analysis. As designers, pupils develop an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues as well as function and industrial practices. The inspiration for the children’s D&T work originates from other subjects and topics and provides a real and meaningful context in which to use and apply Literacy and Maths skills.
