Employers highly value creative and innovative thinkers. At COLPAI, we promote design technology in the firm belief that the subject helps children to become autonomous and creative problem solvers. Design Technology aims to develop children’s ability to design, make and evaluate a wide range of products. Children are encouraged to create items for a purpose and to become proficient in using a range of techniques, materials and tools. Pupils evaluate the effectiveness of their product and suggest refinements to improve upon their design thus developing the higher order skills of critique and analysis. As designers, pupils develop an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues as well as function and industrial practices. The inspiration for the children’s D&T work originates from other subjects and topics and provides a real and meaningful context in which to use and apply literacy and maths skills.
